Cleveland Geekster and doing things!

I’ve been putting this post off for long enough.  I have been quiet for a while on this blog, but rest assured I have not been idle!  On October 4th exactly one month from today some friends and I are trying something new.  We are putting on a toy and comic show in Cleveland TN.  I have been vending at shows since 2011, and this has been something I have wanted to bring to my town since then.

The town I live in, Cleveland TN, is smallish. there is, however, a huge environment of collectors, pop culture addicts and comic shops but there are no local events for these people go to.  We have to go the surrounding bigger cities for even small shows.  I find this sad for the city that brought us the Overstreet Comic book price guide, and used to have such a vibrant community of collectors.  To my knowledge there hasn’t been a collectors show here in at least 10 years. It has probably been even longer.

In the last few years that I have been vending at shows I have watched carefully, asked questions, and made friends.  This has always been something I have wanted to do and here it is.  We are a month out from the (hopefully) FIRST ANNUAL CLEVELAND GEEKSTER toy and comic show!  While we have been planning this for the last several months, we still have a lot to do, but to this point it has been a great journey.  There is a lot that goes into an event like this. We have gotten some great vendors from the region and we should have a great set of stuff to look through.

This event that is something that is important to me for several reasons. As I have said I wanted to be involved with bringing an event like this in Cleveland because I love this town and I love this stuff.  But more importantly it is something I am doing.  At the end of the day I will be able to say I was involved with that event.  I was with it from its infancy as an idea and saw it through to fruition.  I'm excited to do that.  This is something I have thought a lot about lately.  most of my life I have had ideas, but I never acted on them.  This year I have had the opportunity to act on these ideas in a way I never have had the chance to do before.  That is the other reason I am excited!

Show Season Round 4: ROBCON!

This weekend was filled with friends and toys.  This is what all weekends should be made of.  I made my way up to the annual Robcon event that is held in Bristol TN.  This was my first time at the show and I had a lot of fun.

We got to the show on saturday morning about 8:00 (the show started at 9 so we were a bit behind.  we got there and started getting all of our out and ready to set up.  When we go and set up we always realize we have so much more that we think we have!  so we have to figure out how to get it ALL out on 3 different tables!  this time we worked up by using some new shelving so we could have some stuff set up off the tables and it seemed to work really well.

This time we had a lot of Masters of the Universe stuff and it went well.  You never know what people are going to be looking for so it is good to have a spattering!

The show was huge.  It was the biggest Robcon there has been and also the biggest show we have done! so it worked out to be nice.  We were at the back of the show so the rush of people took a little bit to work its way back to us, but when it did it was great.  People were enthusiastic about what we had.  Lots of vintage toys!  that is what we love so that is what we sale.  We had some new additions so the people who are familiar with us had a good time seeing our new stuff!  

It was great to look around the con what little I got to!  Every vendor had unique cool stuff!  It was a lot of fun to see the community wheeling and dealing!

 

I even managed to score some stuff at this show through buying and trading. I'll talk about that in an upcoming post!

It all started innocently.  My friend came to see my collection that had been on display for some time.  Of course I underestimated him.  He thought more people should see this collection.  So he told people.  The only problem is that those people worked for new papers and radio shows etc. . . I quickly began getting calls and since then I have spent some time speaking with some people at some news papers.  

Today the first article ran, and I am humbled my the response I have gotten from it.  So thank you for all of the support You all have given me, and also thank you to the reporters and photographers who did such a good job writing and portraying this hobby that so many people enjoy.  The article could have easily took a negative slant on things, but instead it as made to be a plausible pop culture aspect.  So thank you to every one involved.
